1. I can get a FREE website, why would I pay a web designer?

Just like the old adage "there is no such thing as a free lunch" the same goes for websites.

FREE websites don't often allow you to have your own unique domain name (you end up with something like www.aol.hometown/yoursite.com) and this makes it difficult for visitors to find you.  Not having your own unique domain name also shows that you are not serious about having a website and not willing to pay $35.00 per year for your own name. Having your own unique domain name shows that you are a credible business.

FREE websites usually have to have some type of banner advertisement which annoy visitors and slow down your site.  You often don't control the types of advertisements that are advertised on your FREE website. What if your site was for promoting a lung charity and you ended up having cigarette advertisements running across the site or worse the advertisement was for an adult only website?

FREE websites usually don't allow the selling of products from the free website.

2. Can't I just design my own website?

Sure you can design your own website.  But remember that it takes time to learn how to use a website software and websites require constant maintenance and monitoring.  Isn't your time better spent promoting your business and products and doing what you know and do best?

4. What's involved with getting a website?

Briefly, the process of getting a website goes somewhat like this:

1. Research, reserve and purchase your domain name.

2. Enlist the services of a web designer or obtain the resources to do it yourself (i.e. design software, graphics software, etc.)

3. Select a hosting company for your site.

4. Have your site designed and developed.

5. Develop and code your meta tags into your website's HTML code (keywords and description).

6. Upload your site to the host server.

7. Promote your site with search engines and directories.

8. Keep your site updated and keep your content fresh.

5. How do I check for domain name availability?

One of the leaders in domain name registration is http://www.networksolutions.com. Our personal favorite is http://www.whois.net. They allow you to search expired names also. If you click on either link they will open in a new window. If you host with us, allow us to register the name for you and save money!

6. How do I transfer an existing domain name?

If you have already registered your domain name elsewhere, WBCS Web Design and Hostway will try to assist you in transferring your domain to us. The transfer process depends on the registrar with whom you registered your domain name.

If you registered your domain name with Network Solutions, you can indicate on your WBCS Web Design/Hostway order form that you would like WBCS Web Design/Hostway to request the transfer for you. We will make the request, and Network Solutions will request confirmation by sending a message to the e-mail address they have on file for you. Once they receive an e-mail response from you to confirm the transfer, they will go ahead and transfer the domain name to our network, usually within 48 hours.

Other registars such as Register.com and Namesecure request that you login to their systems, using the login and password they assigned you, and transfer the domain name yourself. Once you login, you will come across a link that allows you to change your nameserver information.

In that section, please update your nameserver information to the following:

PRIMARY NS......: NS.SITEPROTECT.COM
PRIMARY IP......: 64.26.0.23
SECONDARY NS....: NS2.SITEPROTECT.COM
SECONDARY IP....: 64.26.38.2

Here are some links to domain manager interfaces for some registrars, that allow you to follow the steps just outlined:

Namesecure:
http://www.namesecure.com/customercare/index_updatecenter.cfm
Register.com:
http://mydomain.register.com
DomainBank:
https://www1.domainbank.net/domainmanager/

Please contact other registrars directly to ask about their domain transfer procedures. Inform them that you wish to transfer your domain to Hostway, and provide them with the nameserver information listed above.

While waiting for the new nameserver information to propagate around the Internet, we recommend maintaining your site at your current host to avoid down time for your site. During this time, you can use the IP address that we gave you to mirror your web site on Hostway's servers until the transfer is complete.

7. Do I really need a website?

Many experts believe that you can't afford not to have a website, especially if your competitors have a website.

8. How much does a website cost?

The cost of a website can be broken down into recurring and non-recurring.  The good news is that the recurring charges are usually a lot less expensive than the non-recurring charges.

Non-Recurring Charges
The initial cost of having your site designed is where you sill spend the most money.

The cost of the design of a a web site depends on the complexity of the site. A simple web site consisting of only 10 pages with basic page elements will cost less than a 100 page site needing database integration, electronic commerce, or other specialized features.

Therefore, a thorough understanding of your requirements is needed in order to determine the cost of designing your web site. We are very competitive in our bids, and always strive to deliver the highest quality site for a fair and reasonable price.

Recurring Charges
The registration of your domain name which on average is about $35.00 per year.

The monthly hosting of your site depends on the type and complexity of your site, most sites can be hosted for as little as $10 per month.

The cost of maintaining and making changes to your site depends on the amount of maintenance required and the frequency of your maintenance needs.
